Here are a few quick shots of a new lamp creation.

My new lamp

My new lamp

My Can Olivas lamp got a lot of positive comments when it was on show at the recent Gadgets & Goggles exhibition, and I’ve long had a mind to make another in a similar style.

For a while I’ve had an old car exhaust manifold lying around, rusting nicely in the back garden, waiting for the perfect project to come along! It’s a bit of a strange one (even for me!) but I have to say that it works really well.

Like the Can Olivas it is really intended as a downligher, but could equally well be used pointing up. It’s really strange / interesting shape (I left things like a dent, a side clip etc in place to add to the overall look), but works well in the right setting. As with most of my lamps it uses a low voltage 20W halogen bulb, which emits a bright, clear glow.

I left the piece in its natural, rusty condition sealed this with a few coats of spray varnish.

Being an old exhaust, it tended to leak particles of dust and soot – hence I filled the end with a good plug of concrete, making it both neat and safe.

As ever this piece is for sale – do contact me if you think it might look right in your own home, studio or workplace!

The night was fantastic, with a steampunk band (Ghostfire), a steampunk DJ, a bar, photobooths and nightime entrance to the exhibition.

Here’s a quick shot of the band, complete with period backdrop projections:

Don’t you make those lamps…?
