This weekend I played my local arts centre (The Maltings) in a night of folk music – part of a new ‘First Friday’ series of concerts.

It’s a great place to play, with fantastic acoustics and a really intimate atmosphere.

Cameras are discouraged during performances, so here are three (rather fuzzy, I am afraid) sneakily taken shots…

Starting the night was a great slot from young singer / guitarist Simon Stephenson (a graduate of the Newcastle Folk Music course):

Then came a couple of sets from King Alfred’s Cakes – note my fabulous new shirt!:

The night also featured a post-interlude set from the improvised world music jazz trio of Batkin/Roberts/Andrews:

All in all it was  great night and we look forward to doing it again sometime!

(Apologies for the scarcity of posts recently – have been a bit laid up with a damnable bug over the last three weeks or so…)

Anyway, just to say that the folk trio (now a quartet!) I play in, King Alfred’s Cakes, are doing a gig at my local arts centre this coming Friday (3rd Februaru 2012) if anyone is in the vicinity and fancies popping in…

We are playing at the second of a new night of monthly folk events (“First Fridays at the Maltings“) at the Maltings Arts Centre, a great arts venue right in the heart of St Albans.

In addition to ‘The Cakes’ (featuring our new member Ewan Cameron on flute, whistle and clarinet!) will be a support slot from New Roots finalist Simon Stephenson (guitarist and singer), as well as a special guest appearance from Gerald Roberts & Alan Andrews for a few tunes…

Doors open 7.30 ish and the music gets going at 8.00pm. The is a very nice bar area, and of course our CD ‘The Ships’ will be on sale!

Venue address:
The Maltings Arts Theatre, Level 2, The Maltings, St Albans, Herts AL1 3HL
More details on all the artists appearing can be found from the following sites:

Last weekend the acoustic ‘jazz’ trio did a gig at the excellent Museum of St Albans. Here are a few photos of the general set up during sound check, taken by the excellent Al Rogers:

We particularly liked the shots with the ice cream van!

Oops! I realise a whole month has nearly gone by and no postings! Shame on me… I have not been idle however, and here is the first in a series of ‘catch-up’ posts charting recent activity:

A few weeks ago Gerald and myself (minus the redoubtable  Alan unfortunately) did a short set at a charity fundraising do for the excellent Single Parent Project. Set up to bring financial aid to single parents in Southern Africa, the night was very well run and attended, and a substantial sum was raised…

More details on the project can be found on their website here, and here is a photos of us doing our stuff. . .

Continuing the trio’s tradition of doing gigs in unusual places, this coming Sunday 20th November the three of us are doing one in the Museum of St Albans… do come along if you are in the area!

My mate Gerald, who I play with in the Batkin, Roberts & Andrews trio, has just been made ‘artist of the month’ on the K+K Sound’s website.

He has recently fitted one of K+K’s fantastic pickups in his lovely nylon string guitar and is clearly pleased with it! Read the article here, or visit his music page here >>

Gerald is a wonderful player and he richly deserves more people listening to his music – result!!

This week my friend, and sometimes playing partner, Gerald started a new night of jazz at the excellent local cocktail bar Mokoko.

Planned to run every two weeks or so with a rotating rota of jazz duos and trios, the first night featured Gerald and upright bass player Chris Hartgoves – visit their website and listen to a few clips here… The soon-to-be-regular Tuesday night sessions will also feature a floor spot or two (I played a few numbers with Gerald last night) so grab your instrument and get yourself down there!!

Here is a (rather fuzzy!) photo from the night, which I am sure will go on to be very popular amongst the jazz fraternity of St Albans!

Further to the snippet shown in this previous post, my old mucker Gerald Roberts has just let me know that there are more, fuller length videos now up on the wibbly wobbly web re his participation in the Fault Line Living project…

Here are the details:

The Fault Line Living Crew, sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society and Land Rover, are making a series of documentaries about people who live on or close to earthquake faults. As part of this, Dr. Gerald Roberts of the Institute of Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR at UCL/Birkbeck), has made some videos visiting the epicentral area of the 2009 M6.3 L’Aquila Earthquake in central Italy. Dr. Roberts tries to define the role of “earthquake geology”, a new discipline in earthquake science, and attempts to show how this discipline can help seismology in earthquake forecasting.

Viewers can comment on the videos at the following website to document what they learned from the videos.

Enjoy!!
